Mystery snails are highly sought-after additions to freshwater aquariums, prized for their slow-moving and tranquil nature, as well as their role in tank maintenance.
These peaceful herbivores are known by various names, including mystery apple snail, golden mystery snail, spike topped apple snail, and Pomacea australis. However, their correct scientific classification is Pomacea bridgesii.
In their natural habitat, these snails typically have a lifespan of about one year. They contribute to the ecosystem by consuming dead plant matter and aiding in cleaning the environment. Their intriguing feature includes complex eyes situated on a cephalic eyestalk. Interestingly, if the eyestalk is severed, it can fully regenerate within a few weeks.
Mystery snails are among the most docile tank inhabitants, spending much of their time grazing on algae adhered to the glass surface. When confronted by aggressive fish, they retreat into their shells, emphasizing the importance of keeping them with peaceful tank mates. A calm environment encourages their activity and enhances their efficiency in tank cleaning.
Occasionally, you may observe mystery snails ascending to the tank’s surface, only to release and free-fall back to the bottom. Sometimes, they detach a portion of their foot, allowing them to swiftly slide down the glass.
