The Golden Ram is a selectively bred variant derived from the German Blue Ram, itself a color variant of the original wild Ram.

For optimal well-being, Rams thrive best when housed in pairs or groups of five or more, mirroring their social structure in the wild. Despite their peaceful nature towards other tank mates, Rams engage in intra-group fights to establish hierarchy. Maintaining larger groups helps distribute these interactions, promoting a more harmonious coexistence. They prefer aquariums with sand, gravel, or mixed substrate, enriched with plenty of plants, driftwood, rocks, and live plants. These elements contribute to the creation of territories within the aquarium, allowing individuals to establish their own space.

The Electric Blue Ram, being a selectively bred and farm-raised species, is accustomed to consuming commercially processed flake and pellet foods. They are generally considered aggressive feeders, eagerly swimming to the aquarium glass in anticipation of feeding when approached by the hobbyist.

Breeding

Keep a healthy pair in a warm tank (around 28-30°C) with soft, slightly acidic water. Provide flat rocks or broad leaves for them to lay eggs. The female lays 100–300 eggs, and both parents usually guard and fan them. Eggs hatch in 2–3 days, with fry free-swimming about a week later. Feed fry baby brine shrimp or fine powdered food.

As with many fish species, offering a variety of food items is essential to provide the necessary vitamins and minerals for a robust immune system. Ideal food options include meaty flakes, mini-pellets, freeze-dried worms, and frozen brine shrimp. Feeding them a couple of times a day, providing an amount consumed within five minutes, ensures their nutritional requirements are met.
